Tiger Monkey, based in North London and working across London, Hertfordshire and the UK offers arts education and training for children, young people and adults. The centre works across a wide spectrum of community arts from play centres to prisons, and specialises in work with young people outside formal education.

Centre: Tiger Monkey, Enfield, London

Approach
Usually the Arts Award is run as part of a ten-week or term-long programme. To date Tiger Monkey has helped young people achieve over 130 awards at Bronze, Silver and Gold level.

The ‘Awards Area’ is a weekly project where young people work towards their Arts Awards. During the sessions young people are encouraged to take photos and use film to record their thoughts and feelings. They also get Arts Award folders and blank art diaries to record their progress.

Taking part
Tiger Monkey projects usually include games, drama, film making and music production - young people produce their own creative work and stories in a wide range of mixed media.  The programme will work towards a highly professional end product like a DVD, which includes artwork for the cover and professional packaging. In addition, young people create an exhibition of portraits and posters which they can use as part of their portfolios.

Learning
Young people learn how to work together, plan and evaluate their own work. In particular, they thrive on the leadership areas of the Arts Award, where they are handed all the status and power to take control.

Cultural links
Tiger Monkey works with various partners including The Dugdale Centre, Arts Depot, Millfield Theatre, Sound Currents, Eye Made This Productions, Prodigal Films, Olive Branch and Face Front theatre, as well as with local cinemas and event organisers. The centre undertakes considerable research on what is available to young people locally and in London. They also invite theatre companies into schools and other venues for more intimate experiences where possible.

Funding

Arts Award delivery is embedded within Tiger Monkey’s ‘X-cluded Stories’, a 3 year programme funded by the Arts Council 2007-2010, and the award is also budgeted for within any other relevant programmes of work.

Moderation
Emma Ghafur, Arts Award adviser and Founding Director of Tiger Monkey advises: 'In preparation for your moderation, allow more time than you think you will need and label up everything. Ideally get the young people to signpost where all their work is for each part of the award, otherwise give yourself enough time to do it and buy a mega pack of sticky fixers. Make sure you have all equipment needed to show the work. For the moderation find a quiet space that enables you to lay out all the work, and offer to pick up the moderator if coming by train or if it’s a bit hard to find your venue. Make the moderator welcome, provide coffee, tea etc and then let them be, they will call you if they need you.'

Comments
'I think the Arts Award has helped give more structure to the arts projects that I run and give all young people something to work towards and achieve for themselves. I have seen the transformations in young people that enable them literally to hold their heads up high and say 'I did this!''
Emma Ghafur, Arts Award adviser

'The Arts Award has helped many young people get their only qualification or helped them to achieve a GCSE that they would not have got otherwise. Young people have used their awards to get jobs and get into college. The Arts Award has boosted confidence, developed leadership skills and arts knowledge, and created the next generation of artists and arts leaders of the future.'
