'I'm not from an artistic background and it's always been a bit of a family mystery where my love of drawing came from, but I did get plenty of support at home and at primary school to explore something I was obviously very keen about. There wasn't much art at my grammar school but I had tuition at an art club I joined as a teenager and I also gained a huge amount of confidence from the awards for art that I won as a boy.

I was lucky, I know I wouldn't have had the necessary self-belief and determination to pursue a career as an illustrator if I hadn't received the encouragement, guidance and recognition that I did.

Arts Award is there to provide precisely these things for today's creative youngsters, which is why I'm delighted to champion it.'
