Centre: Service Children's Education
Service Children's Education (SCE) is an Agency of the MOD and is dedicated to the education of the children of Service families and MOD personnel serving outside of the United Kingdom. Hayley, a young teacher based on a military base in Germany completed her Gold Arts Award by working with a mask theatre artist, directing a play, starting an online debate and leading drama with primary school children.
Art form drama
Arts practice
Hayley worked in Mask theatre for her arts practise. Her adviser found funding to bring a professional mask theatre artist, Roz Paul out to Germany in order for her to develop her practise. Hayley also had the opportunity to work with local primary school children, something which was out of her comfort zone. (see picture above) These children now attend her school on a termly basis to take part in the schools drama club.
Research
She researched the career pathways and development of various artists and organisations including Roz Paul, Trestle Theatre Masks, Taudevin Dance Company, Adam Coleman and Globe Education.
Opinion piece
Hayley decided to use the service children's education website to create an online debate about arts provision and facilities for Service children on military bases which gained responses from all over the world. Her report and findings were given to her Garrison Commander in order for him to take action on some of the views of the young people regarding the arts provision and opportunities open for them.
Project leadership
Hayley had the opportunity to direct the play ‘Teechers' with the A2 drama group at the school despite being very new to the school. The play was a success.
Learning
Hayley found the Arts Award to be a real learning curve and she feels she got to know her strengths and weaknesses better. Since she is a qualified teacher it has been sometime since she worked in the style of the Arts Awards and she found reflecting on her own practice was extremely useful.
She is now mentoring others students doing Arts Award on the military garrison and is going to train to be an Arts Award Adviser funded by SCE.
"Hayley is a true role model to all the Arts Awards students in the Service Children's Arts Awards Centre. Her debate has made a difference to the arts provision for young people on one of our military garrisons, real impact in action! It was a pleasure to mentor Hayley who is such an enthusiastic and motivated student who clearly supports the arts award for all the right reasons." Joy Harris, Arts Awards adviser
