Arts Award is promoting an exciting series of Open Doors events in Devon taking place between 8 and 26 May 2017 hosted by local arts and cultural organisations especially for schools.
Activities and events are designed to support Bronze Arts Award by fulfilling parts such as (A) Explore the arts as a participant or (C) Arts inspiration. Some opportunities will also fulfil parts of other Arts Award levels including Discover and Explore. For more information and to book please follow the links on this page.

The Theatre Royal Plymouth
Shakespeare Slalom workshop
Full Day workshop
Group size: up to 30
Based on the play, spend a day learning about William Shakespeare, Elizabethan theatre, and what it was like to be an actor 450 years ago.
Puppets workshop
Group size: up to 30
Creating and using your own puppets, focus on how different characters think and move. This workshop can be tailored to a topic that you are currently exploring in the classroom and to any subject area. Students will explore how to design, make and perform with a puppet.
Directors, Writers and Producers workshop
A workshop that offers a practical insight into the worlds of different theatre makers. Unpick Stanislavski and The Method, delve into Artaud’s manifesto and the Theatre of Cruelty, explore Brecht and his influences on theatre or discover the writing of Chekhov that influenced generations of theatre-makers.
Tour and Explore
Group size: up to 30
A chance to discover where all of the sets, props and costumes are made for the Theatre, as well as meet and talk to the people who work there. This is a great trip for students of all ages who wish to practically explore careers and how subjects such as maths or engineering have a practical application in a creative workplace.
Cost: Workshops are priced at £150 +VAT for a half day and £250 +VAT for a full day.
Tours & Explores are priced at £2 +VAT per student.
The venue has parking and lunch facilities. All workshops will take place at TR2, Production and Learning Centre, 12 Neptune Park, Cattedown,PL4 0SJ.

A 1.5hr self-guided walk using downloadable maps and facts
Linking to the North Devon Biosphere Reserve’s ‘Naturally Healthy Month’, research the photography of James Ravilious by following our trail to walk in his footsteps. Compare past photography with present locations using a guide at Halsdon Nature Reserve, Devon Wildlife Trust.

We can also offer use of our Learning Room and some resources for teachers to run their own related arts activity for their students.
Cost: To have exclusive use of the Learning Room with materials for two hours there is a fee of £20.

Le Navet Bete – Devon’s award winning, internationally touring physical comedy theatre company are back with a theatrical retelling of Bram Stoker’s classic novel. It will expose that the events recorded in 1897 were not fiction at all!

Devon Guild of Craftsmen
Exhibition and artist talk on Hortus – A Dartmoor garden over time
23 and 24 May, 11am: Riverside Gallery
Group size: up to 30
Exhibition by Jude Freeman of etchings, drawings and photographs, accompanied by a range of historical information and artefacts documenting the garden of one of the oldest dwellings on Dartmoor. The talk will be given by either the artist or the co-curator to inspire a discussion about practical curation (how the exhibition was set up), the work in the show and ideas behind it.
Sessions may be up to one hour including talk, discussion/questions and a relevant activity about the work on show which can include writing a review. Talks at alternative times on these dates can be arranged by prior booking.
